As a child in Rio de Janeiro in the 1960s, the choreographer João Saldanha lived the dream of Brazilian modernist architecture of uniting the indomitability of the Brazilian nature with the abstractions of the thought plan. The permeability of architecture to pedestrians, the varied relationship with the solar incidence, the vernacular fruition of materials and local resources combine in the utopian desire for a new world made a space for coexistence by architects such as Lúcio Costa, Oscar Niemeyer and Lina Bo Bardi. During the afternoons in the Rio de Janeiro neighbourhood of Leblon, João ventured with his bicycle into a whole series of buildings constructed under this influence. The ramps, the pillars, the sinuous gardens, the free accesses and suspended planes became his childish territories of discovery, where volume, speed, distances and framings were accessible through his body educating the senses.
Paisagem Boldo (Modern Promenade) rescues this kinetic experience that shaped the spatial poetics of the choreographer from Rio de Janeiro, involved with the weight of the body, the volume of the movement, the crossing of space, and brings it back to the plunge into a bicycle ride, where the pillars, the cobogós, the ramps, the free and suspended planes, the textures of modern landscaping resurface in the constructed landscape of a sensorial circuit.
