UM [UNIMAL]

Is it possible for a single body to represent a collective? How does a march turn into a movement?

“UM [unimal]” is a solo that explores the binomial dances of resistance/resistance in dance. Through live commands and instructions, transmitted to the performer throughout the piece using an in-ear system, one questions notions such as authorship, freedom and leadership. The pivotal theme — SURVIVAL — unfolds in two sub-topics: SUBSISTENCE after someone disappears, and CONTINUITY of traditions from past times, of political and social movements, and of the way they impact on and can be seen in today’s bodies. One explores MARCHING, which historically emerges both in contexts of oppression and liberation. This piece intends to investigate a continuous physicality in the virtuosity of its limits, making use of a body struggling to remain on stage and whose perseverance and exhaustion are contaminating and appealing, just like a gladiator in the arena, a marathon runner competing, or a lonely mountain climber in action.
